What is adrenal fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is a syndrome in which the adrenal glands within the body are not functioning at their optimal level because of high stress. Adrenal fatigue is not always identifiable as the signs and symptoms are not very noticeable. A person with adrenal fatigue may be unaware because they feel as if they are normal. Adrenal fatigue in severe cases will result in kidney pain or other organ pain, feeling ‘burnt-out’ as well as having difficulty getting out of bed in the mornings. Sleep is not a cure for adrenal fatigue and much more drastic measures are needed to reduce or remove the syndrome. The longer you have adrenal fatigue, the more organs it affects and the more tired and worn out you will feel.
What are Adrenal Glands?
The adrenal glands are two organs in your body that are responsible for hormone production, particularly during stress. They sit right above your kidneys, which is why the kidneys are typically the first organ to become affected during times of high stress, or prolonged adrenal fatigue.
How to cure Adrenal Fatigue?
Depending on the severity of adrenal fatigue you have, there will be different measures of healing you will need to take. As a personal trainer I work with many diverse populations and notice more and more, how many people are affected by adrenal fatigue. In one of my more severe cases, I had a client who wanted to lose weight and get pregnant but continued to have difficulties and really bad kidney pain. My client was in and out of fertility clinics, the doctors` office and seeing experts, none of which could figure out what was happening with her.
Though I am no expert, I took notes of what she was experiencing, went home to research and came to my own conclusion that she was experiencing adrenal fatigue. This allowed me to gear her meals and workouts to what she was going through. At the time my client was working many hours for her husbands` business and had next to no time for herself. My first step was this client was to rest. Although she wanted to be working out with me four to five times a week, we started off slow exercising two to three. With this she was still feeling some pain, but not as often and was feeling more energized. Our next step was to rest more in regards to work, I asked her to sit at home in peace for at least one to three hours a day, not doing anything and not thinking about work or the business.
For most of my clients I provide high protein meal plans but knew that for her, this was not an option considering she had such bad kidney pain. Instead we played with her macros and found a sweet spot! No more pain. Once she was able to figure out how much protein caused the pain, she was able to stay below that pain and continue her days without her pain. I am a lover of natural health and therefore was able to find as many natural solutions to help her get over this health hurdle and feel good again. Being a strong believer in natural health, I naturally love to use essential oils. While experimenting with our protein intake, I also advised my client to use essential oils on her feet to help with cellular regeneration and cool the inflammation in her adrenals. I made her a special roll on for her feet with frankincense. Frankincense is the king of all oils in my opinion, they worked amazing for my client, my boyfriend post whiplash from a bike injury and I also used it myself post operation. There are many oils that serve many different purposes, so how do you know which ones to use for adrenal fatigue?
Essential Oils for Adrenal Fatigue
Frankincense: Frankincense is one of my favourite oils as its’ cellular regeneration properties can help aid in many health struggles. Frankincense is also great for times of high stress, anger and anxiety.
Lavender: Lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils and is known for its relaxing aroma. Lavender is great for relaxation, and also short term memory enhancement.
Vanilla: The fresh, tasty scent of vanilla also creates a relaxing feeling within which is great for times of high stress.
Rose: Rose oil has the effect to decrease blood pressure and slow breathing rate which in turn helps to relax the body ad bring you back to more of a homeostasis state.
Other oils such as lemon balm, chamomile, basil and rosemary may also be used to help with the recovery of adrenal fatigue.
